AIRP-ObservershipsThe ACR Institute for Radiologic Pathology™ (AIRP®) Visiting Observer Training Program offers non-U.S. radiologists and radiologists-in-training a unique opportunity to expand their expertise in genitourinary, gastrointestinal, cardiothoracic or musculoskeletal imaging while gaining insight into the U.S. medical education and healthcare system.

Conducted at the prestigious AIRP and affiliated hospitals and clinics in the Washington, DC area, this two-month observership provides in-depth clinical exposure. During the first four weeks, participants attend the renowned AIRP Radiologic-Pathology Correlation Course, receiving advanced training in image interpretation.

After the course, observers become embedded with academic patient-care teams alongside faculty, residents and medical students, allowing for a close-up view of patient care and U.S. medical education. Observers engage in case discussions, image analysis and team conferences, gaining valuable insights into cutting-edge radiologic techniques and procedures.

While U.S. licensing laws prevent direct patient contact, the program offers a comprehensive, hands-on experience, enabling participants to explore the latest advancements in medical technology and radiologic interpretation. Currently, observerships are available in cardiothoracic, genitourinary, gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal imaging.

Non-U.S. citizens and permanent residents must submit the application form and email all required documents to AIRPSupport@acr.org.

Your application will be processed once the following materials are received:

  • A statement outlining your area of interest and observership goals.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Copy of medical degree.
  • Medical school transcript.
  • Copies of USMLE scores (optional).
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • Proof of health insurance while in the U.S.
  • Negative PPD test or chest X-ray within 12 months of planned observership.

Once all documents are received, the review period may take four to five weeks. Additional materials may be required. Failure to submit all required materials requested may impact your eligibility.

Proficiency in English is imperative to receive full benefits of the program. A virtual interview may be required by the section chief.

Please note: Applicants are responsible for obtaining a visa to enter the U.S.

The cost to participate in the AIRP Visiting Observer Program is $4,000 USD. This fee covers:

  • Two months of mentoring and training under AIRP faculty. 
  • The cost of the Four-Week Rad-Path Correlation Course. 
  • Access to the AIRP case archive. 
  • Use of office space and computer. 

Payment is due no later than 90 days prior to the start of the observership.
