Musculoskeletal (MSK) Fellowship Training

Founded in 1923, the American College of Radiology® (ACR®) represents nearly 40,000 radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists. We seek energetic, innovative individuals to help us serve patients and society by advancing radiological care. If you value Leadership, Integrity, Quality, and Innovation, join our team!

The American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) delivers top-tier training for radiology residents, fellows, and practicing radiologists worldwide. Its four-week Radiologic Pathology Correlation Course helps participants achieve excellence by integrating radiologic-pathologic correlation in disease identification. This comprehensive course provides over 150 hours of instruction and fulfills training requirements for more than 310 residency programs.

The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Fellow position offers radiologists advanced training, emphasizing education, clinical practice, and research. Fellows review correlated cases submitted by residents, study the pathologic basis of radiologic abnormalities, and participate in lectures and conferences. The one-year fellowship culminates in a certificate of completion in musculoskeletal imaging.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • The applicant must have completed medical school education and obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
  • The applicant must have completed or be enrolled in a U.S.-based and accredited diagnostic radiology residency training program.
  • Strong interest in pursuing an academic career and a research background.
  • The applicant must be a U.S. citizen (but not a dual citizen). This requirement is in place to ensure that accepted fellowship applicant(s) will be able work clinically at one of our main clinical sites, which is located at a military hospital (Walter Reed).
  • The ideal AIRP MSK Fellow has a robust clinical and research background and intends to pursue a career as an academic radiologist; yet, by no means does this suggest that any other type of candidate will not be considered.

The AIRP MSK Fellowship offers comprehensive training in musculoskeletal imaging, emphasizing the link between imaging and underlying pathology. Clinical work, primarily MR interpretation, is conducted three days a week at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, including radiographs, CT, and ultrasound. Additionally, MSK biopsies are conducted one day a week at Washington Hospital Center.

Fellows engage in interdisciplinary meetings, such as the Rheumatology and Arthroscopy conferences, and review over 300 MSK cases annually with pathology colleagues. Scholarly work is required, with opportunities to present at national meetings (e.g., SSR, ISS, ARRS). This fellowship provides balanced experience, preparing fellows for careers in private practice or academia with a unique focus on musculoskeletal pathology.

The fellowship is one year in length starting July 1–June 30. Graduating fellows will receive a certificate of completion stating, “AIRP Fellow completed one year of training specializing in MSK imaging.”

This position has no call duties, and fellows may pursue locum tenens work on weekends to supplement their salary. U.S. citizenship is required (dual citizenship is not permitted), and a full medical license in one state is needed for clinical work at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
