How to Comply With New DEA Training Requirement

The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 included a new, one-time requirement for any Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered (non-veterinarian) practitioner to complete eight hours of training that addresses “the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.” A DEA notice provides details about how the requirement can be satisfied and how affected practitioners will demonstrate compliance with the training requirement beginning June 27.

Practitioners will be required to check a box on their online DEA registration form affirming that they completed the new training requirement. The deadline for satisfying this new training requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission — regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration — on or after June 27.

A variety of continuing medical education (CME) and non-CME activities could satisfy the requirement, depending on individual circumstances. The American Medical Association (AMA) has developed a variety of training modules (total of 36.5 hours) — many of which are free — that can be used to meet the federal requirement.
