Feb. 15, 2024
The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) announced key elements of the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) Feb. 8, including its executive leadership and a consortium of participating commercial and academic entities. AISI’s creation was featured among President Biden’s directives in his 2023 Executive Order, “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).”

AISI will lead the development of crosscutting guidelines, tools, methods, protocols and best practices to inform industry standards around AI development and deployment. It also will be involved in defining AI evaluation approaches, technical workforce issues, privacy/security testing/red-teaming and digital content authentication, among other directives. AISI’s industry-focused efforts will be broadly relevant to all relevant sectors, including the healthcare AI industry, but are not intended to replace current or future regulatory requirements.

The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) will continue to be engaged with NIST and other federal agencies to advance AI safety, effectiveness and transparency. For more information about ACR’s related initiatives, access the ACR Data Science Institute® website.

For questions about AI policy issues, contact Michael Peters, ACR Senior Government Affairs Director.
