The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) and several specialty societies submitted code change proposals at the May 2024 American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedure Terminology® (CPT®) Editorial Panel meeting. The hybrid meeting was the second of three meetings to update codes for the 2026 CPT code cycle.

ACR, in collaboration with the Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, Association of Academic Radiology, Society of Interventional Radiology, American Society of Neuroradiology and the American Academy of Neurology presented code proposals requesting Category I CPT codes for prostate biopsy services and the conversion of Category III code 0042T to Category I for CT cerebral perfusion and CT angiography head and neck. If approved, these new codes will be available Jan. 1, 2026.

In addition, the College presented a code proposal with the aforementioned radiological societies for a new Category III code for percutaneous ablation treatment services. If approved, the new code will be effective Jan. 1, 2025.

For a list of anticipated radiology code changes for 2025, refer to the CPT 2025 Anticipated Code Changes. Awareness of anticipated 2025 codes will provide time to consider changes needed to update contracts for the coming year. The list of the new codes and descriptors pertinent to radiology will be available on the Coding Resources website in October.

This was the first meeting for Eric M. Rubin, MD, FACR, in his new role as ACR lead CPT Advisor. The ACR also had two guests in attendance at this meeting: Robert Bour, MD, who specializes in general radiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Benjamin E. Northrup, MD, who specializes in musculoskeletal radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Both Drs. Bour and Northrup made great contributions and provided assistance that led to the success of the code change applications.
