Leading With Morality, Ethics and Responsibility

May 19, 2022

Raised in New York City surrounded by three generations of family including her rabbi grandfather, uncle and father, it is no surprise this month’s guest, Jocelyn D. Chertoff, MD, MS, FACR, Chair of the Department of Radiology and Vice President of the Regional Radiology Service Line at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, is a leader driven by morality, ethics and a sense of responsibility. (What might surprise you however is that she may also be able to predict your favorite ice cream flavor!)

Dr. Chertoff graduated from Brown University, and then, thanks to a friend who encouraged her to take the MCAT, from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Following a Transitional Internship at Hartford Hospital and a Pediatric Internship at University of Connecticut Health Sciences Center, and after spending two years in a physician shortage area in New York State, and serving as the Medical Director for Vermont EMS, she returned to the Medical Center of Vermont for a Residency in Radiology and a Fellowship in Cross-Sectional Imaging. She came to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after completing her training in 1991 and has been there ever since.

Driven by a lifelong love of learning, she was a 2003-2004 Fellow of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women, received a Master’s degree from the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Dartmouth College in 2005 and completed a Master’s of Health Care Delivery Science, a joint Master’s program between the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and The Dartmouth Institute, in 2014.

In a career full of accomplishments, including being an active promoter of women for leadership positions, she says her most rewarding moments as a leader are seeing people that she has helped succeed and do great things in the world.

When not working, Dr. Chertoff likes to spend time with her two Portuguese water dogs, hiking, snowshoeing and learning to drive her boat.

Did You Know?

Dr. Chertoff met her husband in college and was with him for 40 years before he passed away in 2016. Together, they had three children: Russell, 36, is married and has 2 little girls (4 ½ and 7 months) in Portland Oregon. Anna, 34 is married and has one little boy (15 months) in Minneapolis, MN, and Tizzy, short for Elizabeth, 31, is single and lives in DC.

Outside of work, Dr. Chertoff likes to spend time outside, ideally with her dogs. She has 2 Portuguese Water Dogs, Oz and Scout, who are smart but naughty! She also has a 30-year-old parrot who dislikes almost everyone except her. She often warns people that he bites, hard! He talks a little bit, too. Dr. Chertoff goes hiking/snow shoeing with friends and lots of dogs on the weekends, although in the warm months, she takes the dogs to her camp, on an island in Lake Winnipesauke. It’s been a steep learning curve for her to dock the boat, but there is no transportation to/from the island, so she had to learn. Dr. Chertoff loves to garden, too. She’s working on pollinator gardens.
