Taking the Lead

August 18, 2022

Don't pick your leadership roles to fill your CV, pick them based on what motivates you and what lights the fire in your belly. Stay true to the values that brought you into the medical field in the first place - a little bit of altruism, putting patients first and integrity.

This is the advice of Cynthia S. Sherry, MD, founding chair and medical director of the American College of Radiology’s Radiology Leadership Institute (RLI), and a private practice radiologist associated with Texas Health Resources, a large multi-hospital healthcare system in North Texas since 1989, and Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, a 700-bed tertiary care, level-1 trauma center community hospital through her membership in Radiology Associates of North Texas.

If you are one of the more than 9,000 radiologists who have participated in an RLI program since the program’s launch in 2012, then you have a good sense for what drives this month’s guest.

After completing medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern, Dallas and her residency and fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Dr. Sherry continued to develop her leadership acumen and explore the business of medicine and radiology’s role by earning a Certificate in Medical Management from the American College of Physician Executives (now the American Association of Physician Leaders) and her Masters in Medical Management (MMM) from Carnegie Mellon.

Her career is marked by diverse leadership positions within the hospital and hospital system, her radiology group, and at many local, state, and national physician organizations. Throughout her career, she has been driven by the belief that when supplemented by leadership training, physicians’ clinical experiences uniquely equip them to approach healthcare problems innovatively and with fiscal stewardship in ways that can benefit both patients and society.

Don’t miss this month’s episode to learn more about how her family, key mentors, competitive spirit and commitment to servant leadership has inspired her leadership journey and how her journey continues to shape others.

Cynthia S. Sherry, MD, FACR, FACPE, MMM, CPE

Dr. Cynthia Sherry, a private practice radiologist with fellowship training in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, has been associated with Texas Health Resources, a large multi-hospital healthcare system in North Texas since 1989, at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, a 700-bed tertiary care, level-1 trauma center community hospital through her membership in Radiology Associates of North Texas. In addition to clinical practice, her medical career is marked by diverse leadership positions within the hospital and hospital system, within her radiology group, and at many local, state, and national physician organizations.

The underlying theme driving her extra-clinical endeavors is her belief that, when supplemented by leadership training, physicians’ clinical experiences uniquely equip them to approach healthcare problems innovatively and with fiscal stewardship in ways that can benefit both patients and society. She has been instrumental in promoting leadership education for physicians in her hospital and hospital system through development of the Physicians Lead! Program. She has led physician engagement across the hospital system as Founding Chair of the THR Physician Leadership Council.
