The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) filed comments with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Dec. 12 regarding the agency’s future rulemaking on oversight of “emerging medical technologies.” The rulemaking is intended to update NRC’s regulations to integrate certain modalities, such as Y-90 microspheres and Rb-82 generators. These modalities are currently regulated via technology-specific guidance documents.
The ACR recommended that the agency maintain familiar requirements during the transition into regulatory language — e.g., the training and experience criteria for authorized users — except for necessary modifications and for revisions that reduce duplicative provider burdens. The College also recommended that NRC take additional pre-rulemaking steps to gather public feedback.
