The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently implemented the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy). Sharing scientific data accelerates biomedical research discovery in part by enabling validation of research results, providing accessibility to high-value datasets and promoting data reuse for future research studies. Researchers will be required to submit a plan outlining how scientific data and accompanying metadata will be managed and shared.
Dr. Lawrence Tabak, who is performing the duties of the Director of the NIH, issued a statement marking the implementation date of this policy, noting that the policy reinforces NIH’s commitment to integrate effective data management and sharing practices into the process of scientific discovery.
