The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the fiscal year (FY) 2022 Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems (IPPS) for Acute Care Hospitals and the Long Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Prospective Payment System proposed rule April 27. The rule proposes updates for Medicare fee-for-service payment rates and policies for inpatient hospitals and long-term care hospitals for FY 2022. The IPPS allows CMS to prospectively set base payment rates for inpatient stays based on the patient’s diagnosis and severity of illness. Hospitals receive a single payment for the case based on the payment classification assigned at discharge through Medicare Severity Diagnosis-Related Groups.
CMS is accepting comments about these proposals through June 28. The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) is reviewing the proposed rule and will provide comments.
The ACR will provide a detailed summary in the coming weeks. For more information or if you have questions, please email Christina Berry, ACR Senior Economics Policy Analyst, at cberry@acr.org.
