The National Institutes of Health (NIH) continues to increase diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts through new grants to conduct system-wide evaluations and shortcomings related to DEI.
These grants are one portion of a broad NIH effort to adapt the culture of biomedical research to address structural racism and repair longstanding inequities. The grants will not only support individual researchers but will also evaluate the institutions’ culture in these focus areas.
Additional institute-wide efforts include the 2021 establishment of the NIH UNITE initiative, which aims to elevate health disparities and minority health research, promoting equity in the NIH-supported biomedical and behavioral research ecosystem, promoting equity in the internal NIH workforce, and improving accuracy and transparency of racial and ethnic equity data related to these efforts. NIH also plans to release future institutional awards for excellence in DEI and accessibility in order to encourage best practices for data sharing.
