President Biden may be closing in on his pick to head the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Although several names have been floated for the position since January, Former FDA Commissioner Robert Califf, MD, seems to have risen to the top of the list. Califf currently is a professor of cardiology at Duke University School of Medicine.
If nominated and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Califf would replace current Acting Commissioner Janet Woodcock. Federal law prevents Woodcock from remaining in her current acting position beyond mid-November unless a permanent commissioner is nominated; in that case, she could continue to serve in the acting position until the nominee is confirmed.
