The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) filed comments Sept. 22 in response to a white paper by U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), regarding federal government oversight of healthcare AI.
The white paper reviewed various AI initiatives to date across the HELP committee’s jurisdiction. The healthcare content primarily focused on U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversight policies and activities.
ACR commended the FDA’s important work to date in balancing innovation with safety and effectiveness. The College also provided additional recommendations for policy goals related to AI information accessibility to end-users, post-market surveillance, timely and appropriate payment for AI tools and uses, and collaboration with physician specialty societies to advance clinical quality.
