Headshot of Dr. Carlos

Leading from Her Happy Place

March 18, 2021

In this episode, host Geoffrey Rubin, MD, MBA, FACR, and guest Ruth Carlos, MD, MS, FACR, professor of radiology and the assistant chair for clinical research at the University of Michigan, discuss Dr. Carlos’ serendipitous journey from the Philippines as a pre-teen to the United States where she received both her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Chicago. She shares how that journey to the US shaped how she approaches opportunities, why she almost quit medical school and what excites her so much about the future of radiology.

Along the way you will learn what led to her becoming a leader in the field of health services research as applied to medical imaging and about her pioneering work in comparative effectiveness and health outcomes. As the first woman to be Editor-in-Chief of one of the three major radiology journals and a recipient of the gold medal from the Association of University Radiologists and a fellowship from the GE Radiology Research Academic Fellowship (GERRAF) program -- you will be inspired by this story about following your passion.

Did You Know?

Dr. Carlos loves to travel, the more obscure the destination, the better. She will also say yes to a Maui beach trip to unwind. Although she initially considered being an anesthesiologist, she found her calling in radiology, combining diagnostic problem solving with evidence-based medicine. She is a Diet Coke fiend and will stand in line for a chance to eat at Bad Saint for elevated Filipino cuisine.
