These are the career reflections from this month’s guest, Peter B. Angood, MD, Chief Executive Officer and President of the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL), a professional organization with 10,000 active members across 40 countries focused on providing leadership education and management training designed specifically for the physician workforce.
A general surgeon with trauma and critical care expertise, Dr. Angood spent the first 15 years of his career in academia where he held a variety of trauma, critical care and surgical leadership roles at institutions including the Washington University Medical Center and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, and McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
In 2005, he left academia to assume the role of Vice President and inaugural Chief Patient Safety Officer with The Joint Commission, which led to subsequent roles as Senior Advisor for Patient Safety with the National Quality Forum , Chief Medical Officer with the Patient Safety Organization of GE Healthcare and foundational work with the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center for Patient Safety.
Dr. Angood received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in Canada and completed his general surgery training at McGill University in Montreal, as well as fellowship training in trauma surgery and critical care medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
In his book, All Physicians are Leaders: Reflections on Inspiring Change Together for Better Healthcare, published in 2020, Dr. Angood closes with, “Physician leadership is critical to shepherd health care into the future, creating a delivery system grounded in better health and better health care at lower costs.” Don’t miss this month’s episode to learn more about Peter B.
