In this episode, host, Geoffrey Rubin, MD, MBA, FACR, talks with James A. Brink, MD, FACR, Radiologist-in-Chief at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Chair of Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Chief of Enterprise Radiology at the Mass General Brigham Health System, and the Juan M. Taveras Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.
After seven years as a faculty member at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine, he joined the faculty of Yale University for 16 years, serving as chair of the Department of Radiology for 10 of those years. In 2013, he returned to his residency and fellowship Alma Mater as Radiologist-in-Chief of the Massachusetts General Hospital. As past president of the American College of Radiology and the American Roentgen Ray Society, current president of the International Society for Strategic Studies in Radiology and honorary member of the European Society of Radiology, the Japanese Radiological Society, the Chinese Society of Radiology, the Chinese Radiologists Association, the Italian Society of Medical Radiology, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and the International Organization for Medical Physics, Dr. Brink has been an influential voice in the national and international radiology communities for many years.
After receiving a Bachelor in Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, he decided to pursue medicine, ultimately choosing radiology and graduating from the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Brink credits his mother for his understanding that emotional intelligence is fundamental to strong leadership, and throughout his career, he has skillfully blended this with his engineering background to successfully lead many important and impactful initiatives including a 24x7 coverage program with emergency radiologists which was novel at the time.
In addition to providing image interpretation, Dr. Brink is an advocate for radiologists becoming indispensable consultants and valuable members of the care team and shares some great examples during the episode. As you will hear, throughout his career, Dr. Brink has led with empathy, respect and selflessness and is committed to helping develop the next generation of leaders.
