AI: Discussions on the Current and Future Integrations in Radiology

Join the ACR Medical Student Section and Health Innovation and Technology Subcommittees for an insightful discussion on the growing role of AI in radiology on Nov. 4, 2024, from 7:30–9:00 p.m. ET. Our expert panel features Bernardo Bizzo, MD, PhD, and ACR Data Science Institute® Chief Medical Officer Woojin Kim, MD, who will share their perspectives on how AI is transforming the field. We will explore topics such as the integration of AI into clinical practice, its impact on the role of radiologists, ongoing innovations, and what the future holds. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear diverse perspectives and participate in a live Q&A session. Registrations will be accepted until the start of the event.

No Surprises Act Decisions Seen As ‘Unenforceable’ by Hospitals and Physicians

Hospital lobbying groups and physicians are dissatisfied with the recent ruling by a Texas court saying that decisions under the No Surprises Act cannot be enforced. The No Surprises Act allows practices and health insurers to go to arbitration to settle an out-of-network payment dispute. Despite this, the Texas Court deemed there was no way to enforce an award from said arbitration, according to the Federation of American Hospitals

The AMA believes the court’s ruling will have a big impact on underserved patient populations and those in specific geographic regions, particularly rural areas. The AMA spoke with a representative of an emergency physician group that serves a rural population; he fears his group will have to go through cost-saving moves such as reduced salaries, reduced staff and more.

Participate in National Lung Cancer Screening Day 2024

The ACR has partnered with the American Cancer Society, the National Lung Cancer Roundtable, the Radiology Health Coalition, and the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer to encourage participation in National Lung Cancer Screening Day on Saturday, Nov. 9. National Lung Cancer Screening Day encourages facilities to open on the second Saturday in November to allow those who don’t have time during the week to come in for screenings.

National Lung Cancer Screening Day has the support of the President’s Cancer Panel, which encourages screening centers, hospital systems, clinicians, public health professionals, cancer coalitions and patient advocates to come together as a community to promote and communicate the value of lung cancer screening.

Sign your facility up today. For more information, please visit the National Lung Cancer Screening Day website.

ACR Announces Guidelines for Possible IV Product Shortage

IV products are expected to be affected by a shortage caused by the shutdown of a Baxter International plant in Marion, N.C., that was damaged by Hurricane Helene. The plant has resumed operations to some capacity, but it’s expected to take time to get back to full operations. The ACR is aware this will impact radiology practices and wants radiologists and their facilities to be prepared in case they are affected.

Here are some guidelines the College is recommending:

General Approach

  • Once a bag is spiked, attempt to use the whole bag and use the smallest bag you think you need.
  • Continuously be cautious when spiking a saline bag to prevent puncturing the side of the tubing, which would waste the bag.

Radiology Approach

  • Reduce test flush/patency flush to 20ml.
  • Reduce or eliminate saline chasers in CT.
  • Reduce (but don’t eliminate) chasers in MR to 10ml (if you can).
